Honorary Head of Jury – Elżbieta Penderecka

Promoter of Polish and international culture in Poland and abroad, initiator of music festivals, member of the governing bodies of international music foundations and cultural institutions, promoter of young artists. Born in Kraków. Although Elżbieta Penderecki studied physics at the Jagiellonian University in Kraków, she dedicated her entire life to music. Since 1965 she has managed the secretariat of her husband, the great composer and conductor Krzysztof Penderecki. During 1996–2000 she was Chairperson of the Cracow 2000 Artistic Board – a European City of Culture 2000. In 1997 she organized the first Ludwig van Beethoven Easter Festival, which has been held annually since then, first in Kraków, later in Warsaw. In 1998 she initiated the Krzysztof Penderecki Festival, which is organized every five years. In 2003 she established the Ludwig van Beethoven Association, which took over the organization of both festivals.

Elżbieta Penderecki has won many awards and distinctions from Polish and foreign institutions. In 2003 she was awarded the Golden Medal Cracow 2000 for promoting Kraków, as well as the Golden Cross of Merit of the Republic of Austria by the President of the Republic of Austria. In 2007, she received the Officer’s Cross of the Order of Merit of the Republic of Lithuania, and the Commander’s Cross of the Order of the Star of Italian Solidarity. In 2010, she was honoured by the Polish Minister of Foreign Affairs with the Bene Merito distinction for activities strengthening Poland’s position in the international arena.

In 2011, Elżbieta Penderecka was conferred the highest distinction of the Sovereign Military Order of Malta awarded to women, the Order “pro Merito Melitensi”, and was awarded the Gloria Artis Silver Medal by the Minister of Culture and National Heritage for her long-term work for the Ludwig van Beethoven Easter Festival and for taking care of major music events.

In 2012, the President of the Republic of Poland presented her with the Officer’s Cross of the Order of Polonia Restituta for outstanding services in promoting and propagating Polish and world culture. In the same year she received the Federal Cross of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany for her contribution to Polish-German relations.

In January 2013, Elżbieta Penderecki received the Polityka’s Passports Creator of Culture Award 2012 for creating important music events, in particular the Ludwig van Beethoven Easter Festival; for bringing to light the manuscripts of great composers stored at the Jagiellonian Library; for providing patronage for the Sinfonietta Cracovia and Beethoven Academy Orchestra; and for her outstanding services to Polish musical life.

In late 2018 Elżbieta Penderecki was decorated with the Officer’s Cross of the Order of Civil Merit, awarded by His Majesty the King of Spain, Felipe VI. In April 2023, she was honoured by the Minister of Culture and National Heritage with the Gloria Artis Gold Medal for Merit to Culture. In November 2023, Elżbieta Penderecka will receive from Ambassador Päivi Laine the decoration of Knight of the Order of the White Rose, awarded by the President of the Republic of Finland.

Together with her husband, the late Krzysztof Penderecki, Elżbieta Penderecki has created the Krzysztof Penderecki European Centre for Music in Lusławice, a unique centre for developing young music talents. Elżbieta Penderecki is the President of the Ludwig van Beethoven Association and the General Director of the Ludwig van Beethoven Easter Festival. On 29 December 2020 she was appointed by the Minister of Culture and National Heritage, Professor Piotr Gliński, as the Chair of the Programme Board of the Krzysztof Penderecki European Centre for Music. Elżbieta Penderecki is a member of European Union Youth Orchestra Advisory Council.
